F1 Ultra + slate: common questions

Do I need to prep slate before engraving?

Coasters straight out of the pack usually engrave well, but a quick wipe to remove dust helps. For photo work, a light sand or a clear coat gives a more even surface, and painted slate needs thin coats of white then black for the highest contrast.

Why does slate engrave lighter or darker than expected?

Slate varies a lot between batches and suppliers, and focus height makes a big difference. Start with the settings here, run a small test in a corner, and nudge power up or down in 5 percent steps.

Why do my results look different to yours?

Materials vary between batches and suppliers, machines drift, and focus matters. Treat every number here as a proven starting point, run a small test first, then adjust in small steps.
